The Transition Center is a residential work release programs which houses non-violent offenders who are sentenced and qualify for alternative custody. The residents attend drug and alcohol classes, life skill classes, some attend college classes, and they have the opportunity to look for work while living at the Center. Once they have found work, they are allowed to go to their job, then return to the Center. The Transition Center is a place where they have a chance to make positive changes in their lives. In 2007 Patty Davis started a volunary art program at the Center with initial help from the Trail's End Art Association, with the goal of exposing the residents to art. The program encourages them to step out of their comfort zone to experience something new. Most have never used quality art supplies. Once they have successfully completed an art project, they often share it with other residents and their families. Their large smiles tell the story of discovery and accomplisment. Their pieces are often hung at the Center, and the Trail's End Art Association offers gallery space once a year. This grant will provide art supplies for the entire year. |
