GRANT AWARD
Lower
Columbia Hispanic Council
FIRST ANNUAL ARTE LATINO EXPERIENCE

The Lower Columbia Hispanic
Council received an award to bring a dance instructor to the area to conduct
a free day-long tango workshop for 50 residents of Clatsop County. The March,
2006 event raised awareness about the rich culture of an increasingly significant
population in Clatsop County. The event not only provided the mechanical aspects
of dancing tango, but also the history of the dance and how it migrated from
Argentina to the rest of the world. The event improved the Lower Columbia Hispanic
Council's recognition by the community. It was also an excellent example of
collaboration with Clatsop Community College, the College's Arts and Ideas program;
KMUN (community radio); and the Daily Astorian. The event also generated excitement
and volunteers who are eager to provide more arte latino experiences.
