Thie Cannon Beach History Center and Museum will utilize the grant funds to exhibit the Native baskets collection called 'Jennie's Baskets: The Daggatt Family collection' for a seven month exhibit at the Cannon Beach facility. Jennie was a Clatsop basket maker who produced an extensive body of work. She maried a Seaside settler named Meschelle merchino in the 1880s and later came to be known as 'Jennie Meshelle' or 'Mennie Michelle.' Jennie died three years after her husband in 1905 and during her later life was believed by settler residents of Seaside to the 'last full-blood Clatsop.' Jennie's artisanship and productivity as a basket maker were both noteworthy. This grant will help pay for panels and publicity. |
